It’s September, the kids are back in school, and the PTO is gearing up for another great year, with some new events and, of course, many old favorites.

What is the Nixon PTO?  We are an organization of parents and teachers who come together to enrich the community at Nixon school.  All Nixon parents are members!  We hope that you will come to a meeting, join a committee, volunteer at an event, and/or share your ideas.  A list of the more than 30 different PTO committees and co-chairs can be found on our PTO website.  If you see a committee that interests you, give one of the co-chairs a call or send an email.

Fundraising.  In order to be able to support the school and to provide the enrichment programs that we do, the PTO conducts several fundraisers each year.  This year, instead of an auction, we are bringing back our gift wrap fundraiser and holding our first ever Nixon fun (craft) fair.  You will be hearing more about both very soon.  Also, you will be receiving a direct appeal letter from us in the next few days.  Look for it in your oldest child’s backpack.  (Sending the direct appeal letter home in the backpacks allows us to save on postage.)  We hope that you will give as generously as you can.  We truly appreciate all contributions, in any amount.  Our goal is 100% family participation.

Your generous support allows the PTO to fund many programs and activities to enrich our school.  Last year the PTO purchased 14 laptops for Nixon classrooms, accessories for the 3rd-5th grade Activboards, and playground equipment and classroom supplies specifically requested by Nixon students and teachers.  In addition, we sponsored educational enrichment programs for each grade level, revitalized the Nixon courtyard, and maintained the Nixon PTO website.

We also plan to institute a year-round giving tree.  Look for more information at Back to School Night.  And, the PTO will of course host our annual family evening events -- Monster Mash on October 30 and Bingo Night in the spring.

PTO Meetings.  The first PTO meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 9:15 am in the Nixon cafeteria.  We hope you’ll come!  Small children are always welcome.  You can find our monthly meeting schedule for the year on the Nixon PTO website.  You will notice that this year we are alternating both the days and the times of the meetings to accommodate more parents.  We hope you will take the time to come to our meetings and share your thoughts about our upcoming school events.

Back to school night.  Mark your calendars for the annual Nixon Back to School Night, Thursday, September 24 at 6:30 pm.  There you can meet your child’s teachers, discuss volunteer opportunities, vote for two new parent representatives to the School Advisory Council (SAC), purchase directories and dismissal pads, and order Nixon gear, yearbooks, and DVDs.  We look forward to seeing you there!
